Article 15.
- (1) Everyone has the right to a nationality.
- (2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.
One of Luxembourg’s most remarkable particularities is its high potential of integration.
During the last century, the country has known a huge growth of its population, from 200.000 in 1900 to nearly 500.000 in 2009.
But, only 55% of the population have the Luxembourgish nationality.
There are not less than 176 different nationalities living in the country. Most of them are Portuguese (16,5%), French (6,1%) and Italian (3,9%).
More than 66% of the private sector employees are foreigners.
These figures show the crucial importance of immigration for the prosperity of the economy and the cultural wealth of our country.
On 15th October 2008, the parliament approved the double nationality citizenship law which allows now to get the Luxemburgish nationality without deleting your original one and finally provides Luxembourg with a modern and coherent legislation in matters of immigration.
To conclude we can say that we live in a country which in spite of its strong foreigners proportion does not know any intercultural tensions as one might say.
